1. Brief introduction
The channel is tasked to organise and manage radio programmes in ethnic languages to disseminate Party guidelines and State policies and law regarding ethnic issues, provide information about the distinctive lives of ethnic groups, promote unity and mutual assistance, and preserve and develop the cultural identity of various ethnic groups.
The channel is assigned to make recommendations to the VOV Director General to develop radio programmes for ethnic groups and related issues. It takes part in daily programming production and exchanges between channels within VOV.
Established on October 1, 2004, VOV4 manages daily programmes in 11 ethnic languages, namely Mong, Khmer, Ede, J’Rai, Bana, Xo Dang, K’Ho, Thai, Cham, Dao and M’Nong, with a total airtime of 120 minutes for each programme a day.
It directly involves in programming for VOV Bureaux in the Central Highland, North-Western and Mekong Delta regions and Ho Chi Minh City.
Most VOV4 staff are university graduates who have a good command of journalism skills, ethnic languages and radio presentation skills. In addition, the channel has a group of ethnic collaborators who are capable of editing a number of VOV4 programmes and sending feedback to the editorial board.
VOV4 has developed good relations with local radio and television stations which are currently running ethnic languages programmes.

2. Historic milestones:
2.1 1954-1975: airing programmes in H’re, Bana, J;Rai, Ede, M’nong and Cho Ro.
2.2 1990-2008:
* April 1, 1990: airing the Mong ethnic programme
* August 1, 1990: airing the Khmer ethnic programme
* July 1, 1993: airing the Ede ethnic programme
* July 1, 1994: airing the J’Rai ethnic programme
* January 1, 1995: airing the Bana ethnic programme
* November 1, 1998: airing the Xo Dang ethnic programme
* July 1, 2001: airing the K’Ho ethnic programme
* May 7, 2002: airing the Thai ethnic programme
* January 1, 2005: airing the Cham ethnic programme
* May 7, 2006: airing the Dao ethnic programme
* August 19, 2006: airing the M’Nong ethnic programme
SW, MW and FM transmitters are located in the North-Western, South-Central, Southern and Central Highland regions.
VOV4 directly takes part in making the following programmes:
a. The Great Family of Ethnic Vietnamese Nationalities: aired on a daily basis on May 1, 1975
b. The 30-minute Exchange Amongst Ethnic Groups: aired on April 1, 1998 on Saturdays
c. The 30-minute Ethnic Issues: aired on September 9, 2003 on Tuesdays and Thursdays; changed into the Ethnicity and Development and aired on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
d. The 15-minute Religious Affairs: aired in 2006 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
e. The 15-minute Border and Island Affairs: aired in May 2005 on Saturdays.
2.3 2008 - today
VOV4 has been reorganised. VOV4 and VOV Bureaux in the Central Highland, North-Western, Mekong Delta regions and Ho Chi Minh City directly involve in making daily programmes in ethnic languages with a total airtime of 30.5 hours (excluding a programme in Vietnamese). Each programme has its own signatune, announcement and jingles, demonstrating the distinctive characteristics of the typical ethnic group.
The programmes begin at 05.00 in the morning and finish at 22.30 at night.
